The actual Auction will be held on Thursday, 1st December 2011. The President and Mrs Abela received a courtesy call from the widows of five artists and presented them with works of art by their late husbands towards the Fine Arts Auction 2011 in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund,  part of the L-Istrina annual fund-raising programme.

The President and Mrs Abela met Mrs Marie Louise Agius widow of Anton Agius (1933 – 2008), Mrs Tereza Camilleri widow of Antoine Camilleri (1922 - 2005) Mrs Antoinette Diacono widow of Victor Diacono (1915 – 2009), Mrs Doris Fenech widow of George Fenech (1926 – 2011) and Mrs Rosa Portelli widow of Frank Portelli (1922 – 2004) and other relatives at San Anton Palace on Wednesday 31st August 2011.

The donations include a stone sculpture by Anton Agius, a study in pen and ink by Antoine Camilleri, a pencil and watercolour entitled “On the Promenade” by Victor Diacono, an etching dated 1957 and entitled “Tieg ta’ Kana” by George Fenech and also a lithograph entitled "Wickedness" by Frank Portelli.

President Abela said that this honourable gesture and the donated works of art, together with others that have already been donated by other artists will create a lot of interest amongst even the most discerning art collectors. He continued by saying that this is the third consecutive year that the auction is being very successfully organised by the organising committee chaired by Dr. Pascal Demajo. The previous two editions have already generated a total of €90,000 towards the fund.

Dr. Pascal Demajo, Chairman of the Fine Arts Auction announced that this year’s auction will take place at San Anton Palace on Thursday 1st of December. Prior to the auction, the exhibits will be on view at The Palace, Valletta as from Monday 21st November.  Some of them can already be viewed on the  MCCF’s website. “Keanu” - Bronze Resin sculpture by Robert Hornyold-Strickland – 18th May 2011 at San Anton Palace.

Supporting the Malta Community Chest Fund’s Fine Arts Auction, Sculptor Robert Hornyold-Strickland presents a Bronze Figure Sculpture, Keanu to President George Abela. The story of Keanu is a sweet one. This 4 year old boy (whom Robert had never met before) wandered into his studio one morning and, having spotted his sketch book and pencils, asked if he could sit down and do some drawing. Robert said: “Of course you can! but do you mind if I do a model of you whilst you are drawing?” Keanu agreed and immediately sat on the floor chattering incessantly whilst Robert produced the quick study of him in clay. With no warning at all, after 20 minutes, Keanu got up and said: “I am finished now!” and just walked off (as children do!). Robert never saw him again, but feels that this sculpture captured the moment and so cast it as a poignant study of childhood. www.robertstricklandsculpture.com
