Piggy banks for l-Istrina

(21 October 2009)

L-istrina piggy bank campaign kicked-off officially on Wednesday, for what promises to be yet another exciting run up to the actual broadcast of L-Istrina.

For the sixth consecutive year, the l-Istrina team and Bank of Valletta have joined forces in a spirit of solidarity to encourage children to set aside money for a charitable cause, in what has become a much-awaited fund raising campaign in schools.

The campaign was officially launched at St Gorg Preca Maria Assumpta Girls Secondary school in Hamrun, under the patronage of Malta’s First Lady, Ms Abela, in the presence of Igino Xuereb, Chief Officer Operations at Bank of Valletta.

This was followed by a visit to De La Salle College in Vittoriosa. The campaign helps raise much needed funds for those in need as well as raise awareness amongst the younger generations about the needs of others within the community.

Ms Abela encouraged all school children to make their donation, stating that by putting aside some of their pocket money they will be helping those who are most in need.

These school visits serve as a launching pad for the campaign, which will see as many as 5,000 piggy banks distributed in classrooms around Malta and Gozo, with the participation of over 70,000 students in government, church and private schools.

Ms Abela plans on visiting a number of other schools throughout this campaign. She will be joined in this effort by a number of local personalities who will be making their own school visits to encourage the collection of funds and raise awareness.

The final amount collected, together with a donation from Bank of Valletta will be presented during the live broadcast of L-Istrina on December 26.
